On December 7, 2025, the Farmington Community Library celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the Downtown Farmington building. The event also served as the public unveiling of the Library’s planned renovations for 2026, offering a first look at how our spaces will evolve to better serve the community in the years ahead.
Celebrating the Library’s Past, Present and Future
The Downtown Farmington building, originally dedicated in 1975, replaced a smaller facility on Farmington Road, reflecting the community’s long-standing commitment to supporting Library services. Over decades, the Library has grown and adapted to meet the needs of the community, guided by careful planning, community input, and thoughtful investment in its spaces.
The 50-year celebration highlighted this ongoing commitment. Guests explored building history, shared memories, and learned how initiatives over the past four years — including a Strategic Plan, Space Utilization Study, and Accessibility Audit — have informed the development of the Facilities Masterplan. The Masterplan identifies improvements that will make both Library locations more functional, accessible, and welcoming.
Introducing the 2026 Renovation Plans
Phase One of the renovations will begin in 2026, focusing on essential upgrades and creating more gathering and study spaces based on community priorities. Projects include:
Downtown Farmington Location
- Upper and lower-level restroom renovations
- Construction of a new outdoor amphitheater
- Construction of outdoor play area for children on the lower level
Farmington Hills Location
- Main level and lower-level restroom renovations
- New Children’s Services Information Desk
- Addition of new study rooms
- Construction of outdoor study garden near the main entrance
- Repairs to west parking lot.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next
The planned renovation projects at both Library locations are scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. A detailed project timeline will be shared with the community once it becomes available.
