Planning for the Future of Your Library Spaces
Farmington Community Library (FCL) is excited to share the release of its Facilities Masterplan, a guiding document resulting from extensive community and staff input. The Facilities Masterplan, developed by MCD Architects, outlines recommended updates to both FCL locations that will enhance functionality, accessibility, and the Library’s role as a vibrant community hub.
Why a Masterplan?
The development of the Facilities Masterplan began after the adoption of the Library’s 2023-2029 Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan reflects community priorities—particularly the vision of the Library as a functional, welcoming, and collaborative space to engage and explore.
What the Facilities Masterplan Recommends
The Facilities Masterplan identifies priority improvements and long-term opportunities to prepare both FCL locations for future use, including:
-
Renovation of outdated restrooms
-
Improved accessibility and wayfinding
-
Expanded outdoor gathering and play areas
-
New flexible study and collaborative spaces
What’s Next: Approved Projects
At the March 14, 2025 Board Meeting, the FCL Board of Trustees voted to begin an initial phase of improvements. The following projects were approved, with construction estimated to start in early 2026.
FCL Farmington Location
-
Upper and lower-level restroom renovations
-
Construction of a new outdoor amphitheater
-
Outdoor play area for children on the lower level
FCL Farmington Hills Location
-
Main level and lower-level restroom renovations
-
New Children’s Services Information Desk
-
Addition of new study rooms
-
Outdoor seating near the main entrance
-
Repairs to west parking lot
The approved projects were selected because they address current infrastructure issues and will significantly enhance building usage. All approved projects will be funded by FCL’s general operating budget. Concept drawings for these projects will be drafted and released to the public in late summer 2025.
What’s Ahead
FCL is excited to bring the approved upgrades to our community—improvements made possible thanks to the careful stewardship of the Library’s general fund and capital reserve by the Board of Trustees.
We know the community will enjoy these enhancements for years to come, and we remain committed to approaching building upgrades with diligence, strategy, and a focus on long-term value for all.
The Facilities Masterplan outlines many possibilities for the future and will serve as a guiding document, not a fixed plan. Future projects may require community input and alternative funding sources.
