Many Web Portals—"gateways"—began as Search Engines, and still retain the search option. Over time, to compete for users, they have added selected links, often arranged by subject, to many other resources on the web. In the latest round of improvements, some portals are adding free PIMs (Personal Information Managers), software which provides address book capability and even calendaring facilities. Other sites included here have always striven for excellence in their selection of links and topical guides.
