Industry Classification Codes

Industry research is often conducted using an industry code: Standard Industrial Classification code (SIC), derived from the decennial Economic Census. The U.S. government is attempting to expand this coding with a new system called North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). At this time most private research sources index and classify by SIC; however, it is anticipated that there will be a changeover to NAICS. For more information regarding these systems look at the government Internet sites listed below:

1997 NAICS and 1987 SIC Correspondence Tables

This site shows the correspondence between NAICS and SIC. The new industries, sectors and code systems are also detailed.

OSHA SIC Search

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor sponsors this Standard Industrial Classification Search page. Users may search the 1987 version SIC manual by keyword to access descriptive information for a specified 4-digit SIC, and to examine the manual structure. A crosslinks is given to the SIC manual from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce as well as to the NTIS SIC Page.
