What Is "A Community for a Lifetime"?

In April 2004, the State Advisory Council on Aging issued its annual report to the Michigan Commission on Aging on "Elder Friendly Communities."

The Council's recommendation was: "The Commission and Office of Services to the Aging should become active participants and state leaders in initiatives to create healthy communities for all ages."

Our Livable Community


  • New pedestrian crosswalks have been installed in the downtown core to promote more safe and convenient access to stores
  • Sidewalk paths have been extended and widened in certain areas to improve pedestrian flow
  • Several open parks have made improvements to their facilities including water area, shuffle board and bocce ball
  • During the summer months, free outdoor concerts held on Thursday and Friday evenings
  • Annual Founders Festival Parade and weekend-long event, readily accessible and with provided transportation centers
  • Annual Memorial Day honoring our past war veterans
  • Low-cost shuttle service is available to area shopping malls, grocery stores, senior center and hospitals ($2 each way)
  • Reduced-fare taxi service supplements for shuttle service
  • Extensive community-oriented, multi-purpose facility for citizens of all ages, providing multi-generational activities and family oriented activities (Costick Center)
  • Road sign improvements using larger and more clear signage and placement
  • Several new and/or improved hospital facilities within the local area: Henry Ford, Botsford and Providence
